    Yasunobu Houtsuki

    PROFILE

    Starting in his early youth, Yasunobu Hotsuki – called “Yatchan” by his students – received an unconventional education from his passionate father, whose motto was “If you light the fire of curiosity, then children will begin to learn on their own.” He discovered from first-hand experience that “learning is fun,” and at the same time he realized that he could not experience this same sense of excitement at school. As a result, he dropped out partway through high school. Neither of his two younger brothers even enrolled in high school, but these three brothers had a deep love of learning. All three qualified to take the entrance exams at Kyoto University, one of the top universities in all of Asia, and all three were accepted.

     

    At the age of 30, Yatchan established “TANQ Gakusha” in his hometown of Mitaka, to bring about the educational reform that had been his goal ever since starting up his first company. He began with a teaching methodology that incorporated an “inquisitive” approach to studying for exams, and after five years of research and development, he established the foundations of what he now calls “Interest-oriented” education: Lighting a fire of curiosity, so that children will want to learn more, and try new things.

     

    Even today, Yatchan personally leads classes at TANQ Gakusha, drawing children and parents alike into a world of wonder and excitement. His goal is to nurture people who will take on the challenge of contributing to society as they transform their passion into their life work, in a variety of fields, including astronomy, medicine, economics, and art. In the future, he wants to see “Interest development” adopted as a new educational culture.

    Yatchan has been featured in numerous popular TV documentary programs, and has published several books on his unique approach to education. He is also the father of five.

    Special technique: Make every type of person smile!

    Ryan’s lessons have a sense of "enjoyment" rather than just "learning". Many of us have had this experience once or twice in their lifetime having the tendency to forget the knowledge we learn right after studying textbooks for hours and hours. However, we never seem to forget the experience of something fun when spent with friends. When our minds are able to wander freely our creativity senses come to recognize numerous realizations. So, LETS ignite those inquisitive minds together in a class with endless curiosity!

     

    Ryan’s smile is sure to leave an impression. Even though he was sometimes considered to be "crazy" during his childhood, from an early age he was a child who loved to do fun things while making people around him smile. In order to promote a school life full of smiles and enjoyment he ran for student council and served multiple roles including a tenure as the class vice president. But, in the pursuit of this he was often called to the principal's office on multiple occasions, which is a story that we can save for another day!

     

    Ryan studied abroad in Japan during college, he experienced some setbacks due to language barriers and cultural differences. However, this experience helped him to realize that he wanted to do something that would allow him to make an impact on Japan and then globally!

     

    Since coming to Japan his motto is, “To increase happiness through laughter and enjoyment.” This journey has led to various jobs such as a teacher, a consultant for foreign firms, golf teaching professional, event planning and management. With the passion to find something flourishing with "enjoyment" & the expression of “individuality” he fell upon TanQ Gakusha.
